PM to Inaugurate India’s First 9000 HP Locomotive in Dahod

Dahod, Gujarat —  In a major boost to India’s railway and manufacturing sectors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the country’s first 9000 HP electric locomotive engine during his two-day visit to Gujarat starting May 26. The engine has been manufactured at the newly established railway production unit in Dahod, which has been built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with a staggering investment of ₹20,000 crore.

This state-of-the-art facility is expected to produce 1,200 high-powered engines over the next 10 years, all under the ambitious “100% Make in India” initiative. These engines will be capable of hauling cargo up to 4,600 tonnes and will feature modern upgrades, including air conditioning and toilets for drivers—features never before seen in Indian locomotive engines.

“This is not just a milestone in railway manufacturing but a step forward in self-reliance and innovation,” a senior railway official said. “With safety-enhancing features like an advanced cover system and world-class driver amenities, these engines represent a new era for Indian Railways.”

The Dahod factory is already in production, with four engines currently being built, each proudly bearing the “Manufactured in Dahod” label.

Economic and Employment Boost

Beyond its technological impact, the Dahod railway production unit is poised to become a cornerstone of regional economic development. The project is estimated to create nearly 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in Dahod and surrounding regions.

“The factory will create opportunities for skilled labor, suppliers, and small engineering firms,” said an official from the contractor company. “It’s a win-win for local economies and the national manufacturing sector.”

The 9000 HP, 6-axle electric engine is designed for an average speed of 75 km/h. Its maintenance will be managed at key depots in Kharagpur, Visakhapatnam, Raipur, and Pune, ensuring smooth integration into the national rail network.

With exports also on the horizon, the Dahod unit marks a significant leap forward for India’s electric locomotive ambitions and cements Gujarat’s role as a leading industrial hub.
