Ahmedabad, Gujarat — Over 10 districts of Gujarat are on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of a possible cyclone developing in the Arabian Sea. A low-pressure system has formed near the Gujarat coastline and is expected to intensify into a depression, possibly escalating into a cyclone in the coming days.
In response to the looming threat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has instructed the administrations of coastal districts including Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Navsari, Dang, Amreli, and Bhavnagar to stay on alert. Control rooms have been activated and are now operating round the clock to respond to any emergencies.
“Gujarat is prepared. Control rooms are running 24×7 and our teams are coordinating with district authorities. We will not compromise on public safety,” said CM Patel while addressing media in Gandhinagar. He also directed the State Emergency Operation Center to maintain constant communication with vulnerable districts.
Districts Brace for Impact
The IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for several regions from May 23 to May 25, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and winds reaching up to 100 kmph in coastal areas. Fishermen have been strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea.
Surat, a major city in South Gujarat, has activated its Disaster Management System. “We’ve initiated our emergency protocols. Our control room is active 24 hours, and all activities are being closely monitored,” said a senior official from Surat Municipal Corporation.
Weather Experts Raise Concerns
Renowned weather expert Ambalal Patel warned that the weather system could turn into a full-fledged cyclone by the end of May. “We’re seeing a shift in the atmospheric pressure that suggests cyclone activity. Heavy rainfall between May 23 and May 31 is almost certain, especially along Gujarat’s coast,” he said.
The IMD forecasts pre-monsoon showers before the official arrival of the southwest monsoon. Residents of cities across Gujarat may experience relief from the scorching heat as the rain intensifies starting May 21.
Preparedness and Caution Urged
Local administrations are urged to review flood management infrastructure and ensure power, food, and shelter provisions are in place. Emergency teams, NDRF units, and healthcare services have been put on standby.
“We are in constant touch with local authorities and monitoring satellite data. All citizens are advised to follow official channels for weather updates,” an IMD official said.
