Anthropic is making another major investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure as demand for its Claude models continues to grow.

The AI company has reportedly reached a roughly $45 billion cloud computing agreement with Nscale, a UK-based AI infrastructure provider, according to CNBC.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will reportedly rent approximately 460 megawatts of computing capacity at an Nscale data-centre development in West Virginia.

Anthropic to Use Nvidia Vera Rubin Chips

The planned facility is expected to provide Anthropic with access to Nvidia’s advanced Vera Rubin AI computing platform.

According to people familiar with the agreement, the data centre is expected to become operational toward the end of 2027.

The scale of the deal reflects Anthropic’s rapidly increasing demand for computing resources as enterprises and developers adopt its Claude AI models.

Growing Demand for Claude

Anthropic previously acknowledged that rising demand for Claude had placed significant pressure on its infrastructure.

The company said increased usage had created challenges around infrastructure capacity, affecting reliability and performance for users, particularly during periods of peak demand.

To address the problem, Anthropic has been expanding its infrastructure partnerships across the AI industry.

The company has announced or pursued agreements involving major technology and infrastructure players, including AMD, SpaceX, Google and Broadcom.

A Major Infrastructure Bet

The Nscale agreement represents one of Anthropic’s largest reported commitments to computing infrastructure.

Large AI models require enormous amounts of computing power for both training and inference. As AI applications become more capable and widely used, access to GPUs and data-centre capacity has become a critical competitive advantage.

The 460MW capacity planned through Nscale would give Anthropic access to a substantial additional pool of computing resources.

Anthropic Faces Growing Competition

Anthropic is expanding its infrastructure while facing increasingly intense competition from companies including OpenAI and Google.

The company’s infrastructure strategy is also becoming increasingly important to its financial story. Anthropic reportedly confidentially filed an IPO prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June and has begun preliminary discussions with potential investors.

The company is reportedly facing pressure to justify a valuation of approximately $965 billion to prospective investors, making its ability to scale AI infrastructure a critical part of its long-term growth strategy.

AI Infrastructure Race Accelerates

The Nscale deal highlights how the AI industry is moving beyond simply developing better models. Companies are now competing heavily for access to electricity, data centres, advanced GPUs and large-scale computing capacity.

With Anthropic committing billions of dollars toward additional infrastructure, and Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform emerging as a key component of next-generation AI systems, the global race to build AI computing capacity is accelerating.

The planned West Virginia facility could become an important part of Anthropic’s infrastructure expansion when it comes online in 2027.
