Surat : The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) Congress 2023 was inaugurated in the picturesque pink city of Jaipur on Tuesday with the goal of positioning India as a premier destination for gem and jewellery sourcing on the global stage.

The three-day congress, hosted by the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and co-hosted by the National Gems and Jewellery Council of India (NGJCI), serves as an official assembly for delegates from around the world. It also provides a platform for annual meetings of CIBJO’s sectoral commissions, where vital amendments can be introduced to the organization’s definitive directories of international industry standards, known as the Blue Books, which cover diamonds, colored stones, pearls, gem labs, precious metals, coral, and responsible sourcing.

The opening ceremony of CIBJO Congress 2023 was graced by dignitaries including Gaetano Cavalieri, President of CIBJO; Vipul Shah, Chairman of GJEPC; Pramod Agarwal, Vice President of CIBJO and Chairman of NGJCI; Feriel Zerouki, President of the World Diamond Council (WDC); Yoram Dvash, President of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB); and Damien Cody, President of the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA). Delegates from over 50 countries representing global jewellery brands and trade bodies were also present at the event.

The Congress aims to draw the attention of the international jewellery community to India, positioning the country as a preferred destination for gems and jewellery sourcing on a global scale. Notable luxury brands like Cartier and Bvlgari are part of CIBJO, and their participation in the Congress is expected to further elevate India’s prominence in the world of jewellery sourcing. Similar to how the recently concluded G20 Summit brought global attention to India, the CIBJO Congress is poised to shine a spotlight on India’s potential in the jewellery sector.

CIBJO plays a pivotal role in establishing self-regulation standards within the global jewellery industry. It collaborates with the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and actively participates in the Sustainable Development Committee of the United Nations. Through the Congress, various commissions such as the Diamond Commission and Coloured Gemstone Commission discuss and formalize industry protocols. The presence of international leaders in the jewellery industry ensures that India’s interests are well-represented and protected during these crucial discussions.

“As the CIBJO Congress 2023 unfolds in the vibrant city of Jaipur, it holds the promise of not only setting global standards for the jewellery industry but also showcasing India’s potential as a preferred hub for gems and jewellery sourcing, further solidifying its position on the world stage” said Vipul Shah, chairman of GJEPC.
