Gujarat’s First Railway Sea-Link Approved: Travel Time to Mumbai, Surat to be Cut Drastically
Currently, traveling from Bhavnagar to Surat takes around 9 hours, covering 530 km via Ahmedabad, Anand, and Vadodara. Once the railway sea-link is operational, the distance will be slashed to just 160 km, reducing travel time to a mere 3 hours. Similarly, the Saurashtra-Mumbai journey, which currently takes 13 hours, will be cut down to just 8 hours, making train travel a much more viable option compared to road and air travel.

Surat : In a landmark decision, the Railway Board has given the green light for the final location survey and Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Gujarat’s first railway sea-link project connecting Dahej and Bhavnagar. Spanning 40 km over the sea, this ambitious railway link will transform travel between Saurashtra, South Gujarat, and Mumbai, offering a direct and time-saving route that eliminates the need for passengers to go via Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Anand.
With an allocation of ₹1 crore for the survey, railway officials will soon determine the precise starting point of the project. This initiative is expected to redefine rail connectivity in Gujarat, making journeys faster, smoother, and more efficient.
Drastic Reduction in Travel Time and Distance
Currently, traveling from Bhavnagar to Surat takes around 9 hours, covering 530 km via Ahmedabad, Anand, and Vadodara. Once the railway sea-link is operational, the distance will be slashed to just 160 km, reducing travel time to a mere 3 hours. Similarly, the Saurashtra-Mumbai journey, which currently takes 13 hours, will be cut down to just 8 hours, making train travel a much more viable option compared to road and air travel.
For passengers traveling from Saurashtra, the biggest advantage will be avoiding an unnecessary 500 km detour through Ahmedabad. Instead, they will be able to reach Bharuch directly via the Dahej-Bhavnagar sea-link railway route and continue their journey to Surat or Mumbai in just 6 hours.
Transforming Gujarat’s Railway Network
This project is part of a larger vision to enhance Gujarat’s railway infrastructure, with additional developments such as the 924-km long coastal railway line planned to further improve connectivity. The Railway Ministry has sanctioned ₹23 crore for its survey and DPR preparation, covering multiple routes along Gujarat’s coastline, including:
Dahej-Jambusar-Kathana-Khambhat
Dholera-Bhavnagar
Bhavnagar-Mahuva-Pipavav
Pipavav-Chhara-Somnath-Sardiya
Porbandar-Dwarka-Okha
These coastal railway corridors will not only ease passenger travel but also boost the logistics and trade sectors, strengthening Gujarat’s position as a key economic hub.
Economic and Logistical Benefits of the Project
The Dahej-Bhavnagar railway sea-link is expected to provide multiple economic and logistical benefits, including:
Time Efficiency: Cutting down travel time will make long-distance train journeys faster and more convenient.
Economic Growth: The project will stimulate regional economic development by improving trade routes and accessibility.
Employment Opportunities: With increased railway infrastructure, job creation in construction, logistics, and tourism is anticipated.
Traffic Decongestion: A more direct railway route will reduce road congestion and heavy traffic along existing routes.
A Game-Changer for Gujarat’s Transport Sector
The Dahej-Bhavnagar railway sea-link project is a revolutionary step in Gujarat’s transportation landscape, paving the way for modern and efficient railway connectivity. With major reductions in travel time, enhanced trade potential, and improved passenger convenience, this project is set to transform the way people travel between Saurashtra, South Gujarat, and Mumbai.
