Surat | Gujarat — In a dramatic political mobilisation stretching thousands of kilometres, the Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a unique strategy from Surat to challenge Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. On Sunday night, platform number 5 of Udhna railway station turned into a sea of tricolour flags as more than 1,300 migrant voters boarded the first “Voters Special” train to head home and cast their ballots.

The station echoed with chants of “Vande Mataram” and “Jai Shri Ram” as enthusiastic passengers prepared for a journey that organisers say is aimed at bringing political change in West Bengal.

Four Trains, 5,000 Voters

Following its sweeping victory in the Surat Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP has now set its sights on Bengal. In collaboration with the Surat Bengali community, the party has planned four special trains that will transport around 5,000 voters directly to Kolkata free of cost.

The first train departed on Sunday, while the next is scheduled for April 24. Organisers say the initiative ensures migrant workers — often unable to afford expensive tickets or secure reservations — can exercise their democratic rights.

“This is our ‘Parivartan Yatra’. These are not just passengers but votes that will bring change,” said a Bengali community leader involved in the initiative.

Political Mission and Worker Enthusiasm

Many passengers expressed strong political motivations for the long journey. Arun Mandal, a diamond industry worker, said he travelled to vote because he wants an end to what he described as “syndicate rule” under the All India Trinamool Congress.

“We believe change is possible. Just as development has taken place in Uttar Pradesh, we want reforms in Bengal too. We are travelling thousands of kilometres to vote,” he said, adding that free AC travel made the journey easier for workers.

BJP Eyes 2.5 Lakh Bengali Voters in Surat

Surat is home to more than 2.5 lakh Bengalis, many of whom work in the diamond, jewellery and textile industries. This migrant workforce represents a significant voter base that often misses elections due to high travel costs and crowded trains.

By arranging free transportation, the BJP hopes these voters will not only cast ballots but also influence family members and communities back home.

“This facility is a lifeline for poor artisans who cannot afford flights or costly tickets,” said a representative of the Bengali community. “There is a strong wave of change, and workers want to be part of it.”
