AHMEDABAD : In a remarkable act of courage amid profound grief, the family of a 41-year-old brain-dead woman at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital chose to donate her organs, giving four critically ill patients a renewed chance at life on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

The woman had been undergoing treatment in the Civil Hospital ICU after suffering a severe brain haemorrhage. Despite intensive medical efforts, she was declared brain-dead on August 27.

Following the declaration, Dr Nimesh Desai from the hospital’s organ donation team counselled the family about the importance of donation. The family subsequently gave consent for the donation of her heart, liver and two kidneys.

“Organ donation is not just about giving organs; it is about giving hope, happiness and a new chance at life to others,” said Dr Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

The donated heart will be transplanted into a patient undergoing treatment at U.N. Mehta Hospital, while the liver and kidneys will benefit patients at IKDRC Hospital.

The latest donation has taken Ahmedabad Civil Hospital’s tally to 835 organs from 252 donors, including 466 kidneys, 226 livers and 80 hearts. The hospital has also received 248 tissue donations, taking its total organ and tissue donations to 1,083.

The hospital said the family’s decision has given four patients and their families renewed hope during a time of loss.
