SURAT : The first major monsoon spell has laid bare Surat’s civic preparedness, with over four inches of rain in just a few hours triggering widespread flooding, uprooted trees and the dramatic collapse of a 400-metre stretch of road in Mota Varachha. The shocking incident has raised serious questions over the quality of public infrastructure and the effectiveness of the Surat Municipal Corporation’s pre-monsoon works.
Heavy rain accompanied by storm-like winds lashed the city from late Monday night. Surat recorded nearly two inches of rainfall overnight and another two inches between 6 am and noon, creating a waterlogged, near-paralysed city.
The most alarming incident unfolded on Haven Riverfront Road in Mota Varachha, where a road built over an underground drainage line suddenly caved in. A moving car narrowly escaped disaster after its front wheels plunged into one of the massive craters. The occupants managed to jump out safely before the vehicle sank further.
Local residents soon discovered that the damage extended across nearly 400 metres, with four to five large sinkholes appearing along the stretch.
“Had it been a two-wheeler or a faster-moving vehicle, this could have turned into a fatal accident,” said a local resident present at the scene.
Ironically, a municipal truck carrying gravel to fill the sinkholes also got trapped after another section of the weakened road gave way. Videos of the incident quickly went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism of the civic body’s construction standards and road restoration practices.
Senior officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation rushed to the site, barricaded the road and diverted traffic. JCB machines and cranes were deployed to rescue the stranded vehicles and begin emergency repairs.
Meanwhile, strong winds uprooted more than 10 large trees across the city, crushing parked vehicles and disrupting traffic at multiple locations.
“The road has been closed as a precaution, and repair work has been initiated on a war footing,” a civic official said.
The incident has intensified public anger, with residents questioning how a newly restored road in one of Surat’s prominent localities could collapse during the season’s first heavy rainfall, exposing glaring flaws in civic infrastructure and project execution.
