VADODARA : A political storm is brewing at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Vadodara, over the proposed use of the university’s Union Pavilion sports ground for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event on September 8. A Senate member has strongly objected to the decision, arguing that a sports facility meant for students should not be used for political programmes.

Senate member Kapil Joshi has demanded that the university immediately withdraw the permission, alleging that the decision violates an earlier Syndicate resolution restricting the pavilion’s use exclusively to sporting activities.

“The Syndicate has clearly resolved that the university pavilion will be used only for sports activities. Then under what compulsion has permission been granted for a political programme?” Joshi questioned.

He alleged that large political programmes were being organised on university premises to maintain an alliance with those in authority, calling the practice unacceptable.

The dispute has also raised concerns over students preparing for upcoming inter-university competitions. Joshi pointed out that Vadodara has several alternative venues, including Navlakhi Ground, Leprosy Ground and municipal sports complexes, where political events could be held without affecting athletes.

“When the ground is blocked, where will our players practise? Their competitions are approaching, and the university must put students’ interests first,” he said.

Joshi also recalled an earlier incident in which, according to him, iron pieces, bricks and debris were left behind after an event at the university ground. He claimed that the material damaged the playing surface and resulted in injuries to students during subsequent matches.

He alleged that such incidents undermine the sporting legacy associated with Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad and accused the authorities of compromising student interests for political considerations.

Joshi said a written representation would be submitted to the university administration seeking immediate cancellation of the permission.

He further warned that failure to reverse the decision could lead to a major student mobilisation.

“If the decision is not withdrawn, students and Gen-Z will come together and launch a Delhi-level agitation. The responsibility for any such situation will rest with the university administration,” he said.
