SURAT : For 23 years, Akib’s world remained blurred, but one face was always close to him — his mother. When the bandage was finally removed after his corneal transplant at Eye-Q Hospital, Rander, Surat, the 23-year-old opened his eyes and saw her clearly for the first time.

Akib had been living with severe visual impairment since childhood due to congenital stromal corneal dystrophy (CSCD), a rare inherited disorder that causes clouding and whitish, flake-like opacities in the cornea.

His journey to restored vision began at Eye-Q Hospitals, Bharuch, where Dr. Safwan Lamba detected the serious corneal condition and referred him to the specialised cornea team in Surat.

At Eye-Q Hospital, Rander, Akib underwent a detailed evaluation under Dr. Binita Gandhi, Cornea Specialist, and Dr. Samir Vankawala, MD, Clinical In-Charge. The doctors concluded that a corneal transplant could significantly improve his vision.

However, financial difficulties threatened to put the treatment out of reach. Support from the Eye-Q team and well-wishers helped Akib undergo the procedure.

The most poignant moment came when the bandage was taken off.

Akib could see his mother.

For years, she had been his eyes in many everyday situations, helping him navigate life despite his limited vision. The first clear sight of her turned the medical success into an intensely emotional family moment.

“This was more than a transplant; it was an opportunity for Akib to regain independence and experience the world differently,” Dr.Vankawala said.

The hospital said the case highlights how specialised medical care, timely intervention and community support can transform the lives of patients facing financial barriers.

The story also underscores the importance of corneal and eye donation. Suitable donor corneas remain crucial for patients awaiting transplantation, and donated corneal tissue can help restore useful vision in eligible cases.

Eye-Q Hospitals, which operates more than 37 branches across India, including five in Gujarat, said Akib’s journey would also be used to create greater awareness about eye donation.

“One decision made today can give someone the opportunity to see the world tomorrow,” Dr.Vankawala said, encouraging people to consider pledging their eyes and potentially giving another person the gift of sight.
