Surat | Gujarat — In a proud moment for the world’s diamond capital, the newly awarded Surat Diamond Cut GI Tag was celebrated with the release of a special postal cover during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference 2026 in Surat — a recognition that industry leaders say cements the city’s global identity in precision diamond craftsmanship.
The “Special Cover with Cancellation” was unveiled by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, with the first copy presented to him amid applause from industry leaders and international delegates. The initiative was proposed by the Surat Diamond Association, marking what leaders described as a historic tribute to the city’s unmatched skill in diamond cutting.
“This is not just a philatelic release — it is global recognition of Surat’s craftsmanship and heritage,” said SDA President Jagdish Khunt, calling the GI tag a milestone for lakhs of artisans and businesses linked to the sector.
The GI recognition celebrates Surat’s extraordinary ability to transform a single carat of rough diamond into hundreds of uniformly cut and polished stones — a skill considered unique worldwide. Industry experts say this precision has helped Surat process nearly 90% of the world’s diamonds, reinforcing its dominance in the global supply chain.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister C. R. Patil, and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi attended the ceremony along with diplomats and global industry representatives, highlighting the international significance of the recognition.
Leaders noted that the commemorative cover will preserve the achievement for generations. Philatelists — collectors of postage stamps and special covers — often safeguard such releases for decades, making the honour both symbolic and historic.
Industry stakeholders believe the GI tag will enhance brand value, boost exports, and strengthen Surat’s reputation as the undisputed global hub of diamond processing. “The world already knows Surat as the diamond city. This recognition ensures the name ‘Surat Diamond Cut’ shines brighter on the global stage,” an industry representative said.
