Mumbai : Lessons learned during the deadly COVID outbreak will never be forgotten. Checking a person’s temperature, blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate, and most critically their O2 (Oxygen) level on a regular basis has become standard practise in modern medicine. Patients with respiratory illnesses are increasingly dependent on a steady flow of oxygen. One breath is becoming more precious to people everywhere.

In order to raise awareness about the need of a healthy lifestyle and oxygen for patients with pulmonary disorders, the Pratibha Prabhakar Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre recently hosted a symposium in Goregaon, Mumbai. Dr. Dhananjay Datar, a generous supporter of social welfare initiatives, was in attendance and gave oxygen kits to five patients who need it daily but cannot afford it. There was an oxygen concentrator for at-home use, a portable oxygen machine for use on the go or while away from home for a few hours, and a pulse oximeter for monitoring blood oxygen levels in each kit.

King of Masala Dr. Dhananjay Datar, Chief Medical Director of the Al Adil Trading Group in the United Arab Emirates, said, “My mother, in her last days, suffered from a lung disease and couldn’t get appropriate air. I just couldn’t see her suffer like that. When I see people in such critical need of oxygen but who cannot afford an oxygen supply apparatus, I still get anxious. Many people died during the COVID pandemic because they did not receive oxygen in time, and others did not make it to the hospital in time because there were not enough ambulances. As a result, we donated to a novel initiative called “Rickshaw Ambulance,” in which an auto-rickshaw serves as an ambulance after being fitted with an oxygen tank. The money we gave today was only a drop in the bucket, but we want to eventually aid many more people in need.

Dr. Poorvi Devani, who has worked with patients suffering from respiratory disorders for years, oversaw the whole programme. Patients with pulmonary disorders, she noted, might have a normal and healthy life with the proper attitude, the appropriate therapy, a disciplined lifestyle, and regular exercise, as well as counselling and rehabilitation.

The founders of the Pratibha Prabhakar Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre, Dr. Prahlad Prabhudesai and Mrs. Vaishali Prabhudesai, spoke to the audience about the center’s charitable and rehabilitative efforts. According to Dr. Prabhudesai, “everyone should understand the necessity of maintaining health, adopting the right lifestyle, and realising the value of a breath” in order to live a healthy life.

Dr. Sheilja Sing, Consultant Physician and Lifestyle Consultant, also delivered a lecture on the subject ‘Emotional Well-Being and its Impact on Health’.
