Surat : In an intense showdown for dominance within the world of diamonds, a heated letter war has unfolded between two of India’s most prominent diamond bourses—Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) and the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB). The exchange of strongly-worded letters has sent shockwaves through the industry, exposing deep-seated rivalries and animosity.
The commotion began on July 6, 2023, when the Bharat Diamond Bourse took the first shot by penning a scathing letter to the Surat Diamond Bourse, criticizing the latter’s move to attract diamond traders and companies away from Mumbai to Surat by offering them incentives. The letter accused the SDB bourse committee of engaging in what they deemed an underhanded tactic to destabilize their operations.
In a swift and resolute response, Vallabh Lakhani, the chairman of Surat Diamond Bourse, counterattacked with a letter of his own, taking the BDB to task for what he viewed as an attempt to sow discord within the SDB committee. Lakhani expressed his deep disappointment at the BDB’s seemingly irresponsible behavior, asserting that such actions had no place in a reputable organization.
Lakhani clarified that the SDB’s letters to diamond traders and companies had no mention of the Bharat Diamond Bourse, let alone any intention to force them to abandon their operations there. The SDB maintained that it was well within its rights to communicate with its members without interference or objections from any external entity.
“Our motive is not to harm any organization or create rifts but to promote the growth of the diamond industry,” Lakhani stated emphatically.
The Surat Diamond Bourse, home to over 4,000 companies that have invested heavily in the bourse’s development, sees itself as the future of the diamond trade. Lakhani pointed out that unlike a commercial entity, SDB considers its members as family rather than mere customers, drawing a clear distinction from BDB’s perspective.
The clash escalated further when Kirit Bhansali of the Bharat Diamond Bourse demanded the SDB’s constitution, which was promptly provided upon request. However, in a seemingly retaliatory move, the BDB did not grant permission for SDB to display their banners at a diamond auction. Such incidents have only served to fan the flames of rivalry between the two bourses.
As the dispute continues to unfold, the global diamond industry watches with bated breath. Both bourses hold significant influence within the trade, and any further escalation could have far-reaching consequences for diamond traders, companies, and the industry at large.
Nevertheless, the clash between the Surat Diamond Bourse and the Bharat Diamond Bourse has undoubtedly laid bare the tensions simmering beneath the surface of India’s illustrious diamond world. The battle for supremacy rages on, and the stakes have never been higher.
