Gandhinagar | Gujarat — After brief relief from unseasonal rains, Gujarat is once again in the grip of rising temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of a severe heatwave across multiple regions over the coming week. Authorities have issued yellow and orange alerts as mercury levels are expected to soar between 41°C and 44°C in several districts.

The most intense heat is forecast in Rajkot, where temperatures are likely to touch 44°C on Friday, making it one of the hottest locations in the state. Ahmedabad is expected to record around 43°C, while Gandhinagar and Amreli may also see highs of 43°C. Other cities such as Vadodara and Deesa are likely to hover around 42°C, Bhuj at 42°C, Bhavnagar at 41°C, and Surat at 39°C.

The IMD has issued a yellow heat alert for Kutch, Dwarka, Rajkot and Surendranagar for today, while an orange alert has been issued for several districts tomorrow, including Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Banaskantha, Patan, Surat and Vadodara.

According to officials, the heatwave conditions are expected to persist across Gujarat until May 15, with Saurashtra and Kutch bearing the brunt of extreme temperatures. The weather department has also warned that maximum temperatures may rise further by 2–3°C over the next few days.

A senior IMD official said, “Residents are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during peak afternoon hours and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.”

Coastal regions are also experiencing strong winds blowing from west to northwest, with speeds ranging between 15 to 20 knots and occasionally reaching up to 25 knots in some areas.

Health authorities have urged people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and take extra care of children, elderly citizens, and outdoor workers as Gujarat braces for a prolonged spell of intense summer heat.
