Ahmedabad | Gujarat — In a major push toward greener and more efficient cargo movement, Adani Logistics has expanded services at its Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Virochananagar near Ahmedabad, marking a significant step in India’s road-to-rail logistics transition. The upgrade introduces specially designed domestic dwarf containers and enhanced multimodal infrastructure aimed at reducing costs, emissions and transit time for industries nationwide.
The expansion aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to move cargo transportation away from highways and onto rail networks. By enabling more freight to shift from trucks to trains, the initiative is expected to bring down overall logistics expenses for customers while easing congestion on major road corridors.
A senior company spokesperson said, “This expansion represents a transformative step toward a smarter and more sustainable logistics ecosystem. By strengthening rail-based cargo movement, we are helping businesses move goods faster, cheaper and with a lower carbon footprint.”
The newly introduced domestic dwarf containers feature modern engineering that allows them to carry larger payloads than traditional containers. Their biggest advantage is compatibility with double-stack operations on electrified railway tracks. By stacking containers one above the other, trains can transport nearly double the cargo in a single journey, significantly improving efficiency and network capacity.
Industry experts believe the initiative will benefit sectors that depend heavily on bulk transportation. “Industries such as FMCG, chemicals, metals and retail will gain greater flexibility and faster turnaround times,” said a logistics analyst. “The improved reliability of rail freight will help companies optimise supply chains and manage costs more effectively.”
The upgraded Virochananagar ICD will also streamline domestic cargo routes, enabling smoother movement across key industrial corridors. With reduced transit time and enhanced reliability, businesses can expect improved delivery schedules and better inventory planning.
Beyond economic gains, the expansion strengthens India’s push for green logistics. Rail transport produces far fewer emissions compared to road freight, making the shift a crucial step toward sustainable infrastructure development.
Company officials added, “Our goal is to build an ecosystem that is both economically viable and environmentally responsible. This initiative is a milestone in modernising India’s logistics network.”
