Vapi : An inspector with the Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST) department in Vapi was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Surat division officers for accepting bribe to the tune of Rs 40,000 from a company owner at the CGST office in Vapi on Wednesday.

Official sources said that the accused identified as Yashwant Rajendra Gehlaut, inspector with the CGST office in Vapi demanded Rs 40,000 from the complainant who owns a private construction firm.

The complaint’s firm had paid Central GST and State GST tax for the year 2020-21. However, after receiving a notice on the portal of CGST and Central Excise regarding the payment of CGST and SGST, the complainant went to the CGST office and met the accused.

Gehlaut demanded Rs. 40,000 from the complainant in exchange for getting the notice given to the complainant’s firm regarding tax settled. The complainant did not want to pay the bribe money, so he contacted the ACB and filed a complaint.

The ACB Surat division officers led by police inspector SN Gohil organised a trap at the CGST office in Vapi. The accused had a purposeful conversation with the complainant and accepted Rs 40,000 worth of powdered notes.

A case has been registered against the accused and investigations are going on.
