Surat Tree Crash Injures Four, Exposes Civic Neglect

SURAT: A tree that locals allegedly warned authorities about a year ago finally came crashing down near Dotiwala Bakery, close to the crowded Nanpura vegetable market, leaving several people injured and vehicles crushed. The incident has raised serious questions over the Surat Municipal Corporation’s response to complaints about hazardous trees.

The massive tree suddenly collapsed around 10 am, striking pedestrians, vegetable and fish vendors and nearby vehicles. Four to five people were reportedly injured, while five to seven vehicles and shops were damaged. A video of the incident shows people scrambling to escape as the tree crashes onto the busy roadside.

The incident has triggered anger among traders and residents, who allege that timely action could have prevented the danger from escalating.

Eyewitness Firoz Shaikh claimed that a written representation was submitted to authorities in 2025, seeking removal of the hazardous tree. However, he alleged that no action was taken after officials cited the land being associated with a Dargah.

“A written request had been submitted in 2025 to cut down this hazardous tree, but the authorities avoided taking action,” Shaikh said.

The collapse also injured Nayanaben, a fish vendor, who suffered a head injury.

“The tree suddenly collapsed on its own. Our only demand is that such hazardous trees should be cut down so that nobody is injured again,” she said.

Following the incident, local residents and traders demanded an immediate survey and removal of other weak trees in the area, warning that another collapse could result in more serious casualties.

The Surat Fire and Emergency Services responded after receiving a call through the 112 helpline. Fire Officer Balvantsinh said the team reached the spot promptly. Locals had already shifted three injured persons to hospital.

After checking that no one remained trapped, firefighters used cutting equipment to dismantle the fallen tree, remove damaged vehicles and reopen the main road.
