Surat : The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) recently held a strategic meeting with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Board to explore opportunities for boosting tourism exchanges between India and Sri Lanka. The meeting, led by SGCCI President Vijay Mewawala, focused on fostering cooperation, developing joint initiatives, and enhancing ties between the two nations through the thriving tourism sector.

In his keynote address, Mewawala highlighted the rich cultural and natural heritage of India and the growing appeal of the country as a global tourism destination. He noted that the influx of international tourists creates significant employment opportunities and contributes substantially to India’s economy. Stressing the importance of cultural diplomacy, he remarked, “The philosophical idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ can guide the tourism exchange between India and Sri Lanka, strengthening our bond.”

SGCCI Vice President Nikhil Madrasi emphasized India’s tradition of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God) and its role in fostering better relations between nations. He expressed optimism that tourism could drive economic growth while deepening bilateral ties.

Past President Ramesh Vaghasia underscored the transformative power of travel, stating that it enhances knowledge and fosters personal growth. He also pointed to the lucrative investment and employment opportunities the tourism sector offers.

The session, chaired by Buddhika Hewawasam of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Board, provided valuable insights into Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. Hewawasam highlighted the significant potential for collaboration, especially in areas like cultural tourism, eco-tourism, and heritage tourism.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to enhance tourism-related trade and cooperation. The initiative is expected to strengthen the economic partnership between India and Sri Lanka, paving the way for new investment opportunities and mutual growth.

This collaboration signifies a promising step toward building a robust tourism exchange framework that benefits both nations, reflecting their shared cultural ethos and commitment to development.
