Surat | Gujarat — A wave of shock and grief swept through Surat after the bodies of two young college students were discovered inside a bathroom at a temple in the Dindoli area, triggering a detailed police investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The incident took place at the Atmiya Sanskardham Swaminarayan Temple located on Saniya Kanade Road in Dindoli, a rapidly developing locality in Surat. The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Roshni Sharad Shirsath and 20-year-old Jyotsna Atul Chaudhary, both students of Udhna Citizen College.
According to police, the two girls were childhood friends who had left their homes on Saturday morning, telling their families they were heading to college. However, when they failed to return by afternoon, their families began searching for them and repeatedly tried calling their phones, but the calls went unanswered.
A relative, Subhashbhai, said the families became increasingly worried as hours passed. “Both of them left home around 7 am. Their college ends at around 12:30 pm, but when they didn’t return even by 1:30 pm and stopped answering calls or messages, we knew something was wrong,” he said.
By around 3 pm, the families approached Dindoli Police and lodged a complaint. Meanwhile, relatives began tracing their last known mobile location, which pointed to the area near the temple.
“When we reached the temple premises, we found their scooty parked there,” the relative said. “We searched the entire temple but couldn’t find them. One bathroom had its light on and the door was locked from inside. When we broke the door, we saw both the girls lying there.”
The girls were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, but doctors there reportedly refused admission. They were then taken to a government hospital where doctors declared both of them dead.
During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from the temple premises. According to Dindoli Police Inspector R. J. Chudasama, the footage shows the two girls entering the temple around 7:15 pm and heading towards the bathroom about 15 minutes later.
“The CCTV footage clearly shows both girls walking towards the bathroom and closing the door from inside,” the officer said.
Investigators also found poison tablets, injection syringes and medicine bottles inside the bathroom. These items have been seized and will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination.
Police sources further revealed that during the digital investigation, one of the girls had allegedly searched online for information about suicide methods before the incident.
“We have registered an accidental death case and are examining all possible angles. Statements of family members are being recorded and the forensic report will help determine the exact cause of death,” Inspector Chudasama added.
