Surat : Every morning and evening, a unique spectacle unfolds on the Tapi river bridges in Surat, Gujarat. Flocks of seagulls, migratory birds who have traveled over 4,000 kilometers from Mongolia and Siberia, descend upon the bridges not for fish, but for a local delicacy – Ganthiya.

Ganthiya is a savory Gujarati snack made from chickpea flour, and it seems these seagulls have developed a special fondness for it. Locals have taken to feeding the birds, lining the bridge walls with ganthiyas for the hungry gulls to feast upon.

This unusual bond between humans and seagulls has become a local attraction, drawing curious onlookers and photographers. The sight of these graceful birds descending from the sky to snatch up their favorite treat is truly mesmerizing.

But what makes ganthiya so appealing to seagulls? Experts believe that it’s the high protein content of the snack that attracts them. Ganthiya is made with roasted gram flour, which is a rich source of protein and essential nutrients. This makes it an ideal food source for birds who have traveled a long distance and need to replenish their energy.

The seagulls’ ability to recognize and remember individuals who regularly feed them is also noteworthy. They can easily spot familiar faces from a distance, and they often gather around them in anticipation of their daily treat. This intelligent behavior highlights the remarkable cognitive abilities of these birds.

“This unusual feeding tradition not only provides sustenance to the migratory seagulls but also fosters a sense of community and compassion among the people of Surat. It serves as a reminder of the deep connection between humans and nature, and the importance of co-existence and respect for all living beings” said a volunteer of Nature Club Surat (NCS).

Interesting facts about seagulls:

Seagulls are highly social birds and live in colonies. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals.Seagulls have a lifespan of up to 25 years in the wild. They are excellent swimmers and fliers. Seagulls are very resourceful and adaptable birds.
