New Delhi [India], August 13: LawBhoomi, one of India’s leading legal education and career platforms, is witnessing a growing shift in how law students approach professional learning. Alongside their regular college education, students are increasingly opting for practical, mentor-led online courses that provide exposure to legal drafting, industry practices, networking opportunities and, in some cases, internships with leading law firms and organisations.

Traditional legal education remains essential in building a strong understanding of statutes, legal principles and jurisprudence. However, students are increasingly recognising the importance of supplementing academic learning with skills that are directly relevant to professional legal work.

Contract law is one such example. While students study the Indian Contract Act as part of their law degree, professional work often requires them to understand how agreements are drafted, clauses are negotiated, risks are identified and commercial interests are protected. These practical aspects require a different kind of exposure beyond simply understanding the provisions of the law.

A similar shift can be seen in areas such as corporate law, legal drafting, intellectual property rights, cyber law and technology law. Students are increasingly seeking courses that allow them to learn directly from practising lawyers, law firm partners, in-house counsels and professionals who can explain how legal concepts are applied in real-world situations.

The preference is also gradually moving beyond certificate-based learning. Students are looking at the overall value of a programme, including the skills it helps them develop, the mentors they can interact with, the networking opportunities available and whether it can improve their internship or employment prospects.

Courses that provide internship opportunities with established law firms and organisations are also attracting interest. For students, such opportunities can provide a chance to apply what they have learned while also gaining meaningful professional exposure.

LawBhoomi has seen sustained interest in practical and career-oriented programmes related to areas such as contract drafting, corporate law, legal drafting, intellectual property, cyber law and emerging technology.

Artificial intelligence is another example of how quickly professional requirements are evolving. Tools such as ChatGPT and Claude are increasingly becoming relevant to legal research, drafting and professional workflows. At the same time, lawyers are encountering newer legal questions involving artificial intelligence, copyright, privacy, data protection, deepfakes and technology regulation.

Many of these developments are emerging at a pace that makes continuous upskilling increasingly important for students and young legal professionals.

The shift towards online practical learning is also helping improve access to professional exposure. Students studying outside major legal education hubs may not always have the same access to practitioners, specialised workshops, law firm interactions or professional networks as students studying in larger cities or well-connected institutions.

Online legal courses can help reduce this gap by providing students across the country with access to mentors, specialised skills and professional opportunities irrespective of their college or geographical location.

This approach closely aligns with LawBhoomi’s broader aim of improving access to legal education, career information and opportunities for law students across India.

LawBhoomi’s observations are supported by its large and engaged legal community. The platform currently reaches over 5 lakh users every month, with more than 2 million monthly site views. Its wider community also includes over 100,000 LinkedIn followers, more than 60,000 Instagram followers, over 100,000 members across its WhatsApp groups and more than 22,000 members on its Telegram channel. This wide reach gives the platform a strong view of the evolving interests, learning preferences and career priorities of law students across the country.

The emerging trend reflects a broader change in how students are preparing for legal careers. A law degree continues to provide the academic foundation, but students are increasingly combining it with practical skills, mentorship, networking and industry exposure.

For the next generation of lawyers, professional preparation is gradually becoming not just about knowing the law, but also understanding how to apply it in practice.
