Adani’s Message After US Case: Trust, Values and Nation-Building

AHMEDABAD: From a high-profile US legal battle to a broader message on values and nation-building, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani has spoken about the lessons of adversity, the importance of trust and the responsibility of businesses in shaping India’s future.

Speaking in the second edition of “Apni Baat, Apno Ke Saath” ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day, Adani reflected on the dismissal of the US Department of Justice criminal case against him by the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York on August 10.

Adani said the experience had strengthened his faith in the rule of law while reinforcing the importance of humility and values.

“Adversity does not build character, but exposes it,” Adani said, emphasising that lasting trust comes from keeping promises, standing by one’s values and doing the right thing even during difficult periods.

Recalling the Adani Group’s decision to withdraw its ₹20,000-crore FPO, he said: “Trust is greater than any legal right.” He explained that while the law provides rights, values determine when those rights should be exercised.

Adani also addressed the group’s wider workforce and partners, which he said spans more than three lakh people across over 700 locations. He urged them to consider what their collective work would leave behind for future generations.

“What will our firm be remembered for?” he asked, framing the question as central to the group’s journey towards a developed India.

He highlighted the contribution of employees, workers, suppliers, contractors and partners who continued working through the legal proceedings, describing their commitment as the “true strength” of the Adani family.

Recalling a conversation with engineer Amit Kumar at the Khavda Renewable Energy Park, Adani said development should extend beyond infrastructure.

He said the larger goal should be to “instil hope, restore dignity and transform lives.”

Looking towards India’s centenary of independence, Adani called for greater humility, integrity and purpose, saying the next generation must focus not only on building businesses but also on creating institutions that outlast individuals and expand opportunities.

The comments come days after a US federal judge dismissed the criminal case against Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani. The dismissal ended the criminal proceedings before trial, while separate civil and regulatory matters have followed their own course.
