GANDHINAGAR: The BJP has retained control of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC), winning 38 of the 44 seats, but its reduced tally and the Congress’s improved performance have altered the seat arithmetic in Gujarat’s capital.
The BJP won three fewer seats than in the 2021 civic elections, when it secured 41 seats. Despite the decline, the party maintained a commanding majority in the municipal corporation.
The Congress increased its tally from two seats in 2021 to five, gaining three seats and improving its representation in the civic body.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had won one seat in the previous election, failed to win any seats this time. An independent candidate secured the remaining seat.
The results reflect a mixed outcome for the opposition, with the Congress making gains while AAP lost its representation in the corporation.
Polling was held across all 11 wards, with 130 candidates contesting the 44 seats. The civic election recorded a voter turnout of 59.25%, with approximately 2.59 lakh voters registered in the municipal corporation area.
The BJP’s victory ensures continuity in the administration of the state capital’s civic body, while the Congress’s improved tally gives it a larger presence in municipal deliberations.
The results also mark a setback for AAP, which had entered the previous civic election with a seat in the corporation but could not retain its foothold.
