Surat to Implement AI-Driven Traffic Signal System for Better Traffic Management

SURAT, GUJARAT : The Surat Police Commissioner has announced a pioneering initiative to regulate traffic signals using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. This move aims to address the city’s increasing traffic congestion and reduce prolonged waiting times at intersections.

AI Integration for Traffic Flow Optimization

The implementation of AI technology will synchronize traffic signal timers, allowing for more efficient management of traffic flow. The AI software will provide real-time data on the number of vehicles waiting at signals, enabling the system to adjust signal timings dynamically to alleviate congestion.

Addressing Traffic Jams and Violations

Recent traffic jams and long wait times have prompted this initiative. The AI system will not only manage traffic signals but also monitor traffic violations. It will capture images of offenders and send them to the control room for further action, ensuring that violators face appropriate penalties. This dual functionality aims to enhance overall traffic discipline and safety.

Real-Time Traffic Monitoring

The AI-driven system will allow for real-time monitoring of traffic on major roads, enabling authorities to respond promptly to emerging congestion issues. A prime example is the Piplod to Dumas road, notorious for frequent traffic jams during weekends. Currently, signal timings are adjusted manually, but with AI integration, such traffic issues are expected to be mitigated more effectively and efficiently.

Adaptation During Metro Construction

Due to the ongoing metro train construction, manual traffic management will continue at diversions. However, technological support is being expanded with the recent installation of 50 speakers alongside CCTV cameras. These speakers will enable authorities to directly communicate with drivers violating traffic rules from the control room, providing immediate warnings and instructions.
