Surat Municipal Corporation Employees Under Scrutiny for Political Affiliation
The controversy centers around SMC's junior engineer from the town development department in Varachha zone, Nilesh Pithadiya, Varachha zone accountant Bhanu Kantharia, and several employees from the property tax and health departments of Varachha zone, who reportedly participated in a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event called "Meri Mati, Mera Desh" held in Varachha.
Surat : Recent allegations have surfaced regarding the involvement of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) employees in political events, raising questions about their impartiality and professionalism.
The controversy centers around SMC’s junior engineer from the town development department in Varachha zone, Nilesh Pithadiya, Varachha zone accountant Bhanu Kantharia, and several employees from the property tax and health departments of Varachha zone, who reportedly participated in a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event called “Meri Mati, Mera Desh” held in Varachha.
Aslam Cyclewala, a former Congress councilor, has filed a representation with Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal, urging her to take action against the SMC employees who allegedly attended the political event in their official dress code.
Cyclewala contends that the participation of SMC employees in the “Meri Mati, Mera Desh” event amounted to an open declaration of support for the BJP. He claims that these employees were publicly recognized and felicitated by BJP functionaries during the event while wearing their official SMC attire.
Expressing his dismay, Cyclewala stated, “It is shameful and disturbing that SMC employees have shown their open allegiance to the BJP by attending the party’s event in Varachha. They participated in the political event while on duty without seeking permission from their senior authorities.”
Cyclewala further emphasized his demand for the dismissal of all SMC employees from the Varachha zone who were present at the BJP event. He believes that their involvement in political activities while representing the municipal corporation undermines the neutrality and professionalism expected from public servants.
The allegations have sparked a debate over the appropriate conduct of government employees, who are expected to remain impartial and refrain from participating in political events during their official duties.
Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal has not yet issued a response regarding the matter, but the incident has drawn attention to the need for clearer guidelines and policies regarding the political involvement of public employees while in their official capacities.
