GANDHINAGAR: In a move aimed at making medical-based transfers easier for government employees, the Gujarat government has approved a permanent three-member Medical Board at GMERS Hospital, Sola, Ahmedabad, reducing the workload of the Permanent Medical Board at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

The decision, taken under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and approved by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Praful Pansheriya, will particularly benefit Education Department and Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) employees.

Under the new arrangement, Class-III Education Department employees and Class-III and Class-IV GSRTC employees can obtain medical certificates required for transfers or cadre changes on medical grounds from Sola GMERS.

Primary and secondary teachers, Vidya Sahayaks and Assistant Teachers requiring medical certificates for intra-district or inter-district transfers due to serious or incurable illnesses will be examined by the new board.

Employees from Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Banaskantha and Surendranagar will be covered by the facility. Employees from other districts will continue to use their nearest existing Permanent Medical Board.

For GSRTC cadre changes, the facility will cover Class-III and Class-IV employees from the Ahmedabad, Mehsana, Himmatnagar and Palanpur divisions.

Following medical examinations, the Sola board will issue permanent “Fit” or “Unfit” certificates, officials said.

The government said the move will decentralise the certification process and provide employees with a designated facility closer to their administrative regions.

“This decision will make the medical-based transfer and cadre-change process more streamlined and convenient for employees,” the government said.

The new board will comprise three members, with a Civil Surgeon or Senior Professor of Medicine serving as chairperson. The hospital’s Medical Superintendent will formally appoint the chairperson and other members.

Until now, cases from the eight Education Department districts and four GSRTC divisions were handled by Ahmedabad Civil Hospital’s Permanent Medical Board, adding to its workload.

The new Sola facility is expected to speed up medical certification, simplify transfers and reduce pressure on Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, benefiting thousands of employees navigating medical-based service matters.
