Gujarat :Second students commits suicide at Marwadi University within a week

RAJKOT: A second student death by suicide at Marwadi University within a week has triggered fresh questions over student safety and support systems on the campus. On September 25, Andhra Pradesh-origin student Hemant Gandham, a third-year computer science student, died by suicide at the university. Police have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The development comes just days after a 19-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh, Alla Venkatesh Soubharnika, died by suicide at the university’s girls’ hostel on September 19. Police had said no suicide note was found and were investigating the circumstances of her death.

Marwadi University Executive Registrar Naresh Jadeja said preliminary CCTV footage showed Gandham entering the campus without his college bag and proceeding towards the sixth floor. He said the student had been regular in his studies and had no academic backlogs.

“There appear to be no issues related to his academics. Further details will be shared after speaking with his family and friends,” Jadeja said.

University Deputy Registrar Varghese Nidheesh said the incident occurred around 8.10am. The Kuvadva police have initiated an investigation, sent the body for post-mortem examination and are questioning staff, classmates and roommates.

According to university officials, Gandham had returned to campus after undergoing major medical treatment during a period when he was away from the university. His examinations had reportedly begun on September 16.

The second death has prompted renewed protests by student organisations. ABVP activists staged a demonstration at the university, following which clashes were reported between protesters and police. ABVP representatives alleged that the university had failed to adequately address student concerns after the September 19 incident.

ABVP Secretary Pushprajsinh Jhala said, “It appears that Marwadi University is indifferent to the lives of its students. We had earlier submitted a memorandum after the female student’s death and raised concerns.”

Police are now investigating both incidents. No confirmed reason for Gandham’s death has been established, and allegations raised by student groups remain subject to investigation.
