New Delhi (India): While conquering acne might feel like a victory, the scars it leaves behind serve as lingering reminders. Dr. Simon Ourian, a renowned cosmetic dermatology doctor sheds light on understanding and treating these residual marks for clearer, brighter skin.

What Are Acne Scars?

Acne scars can be categorized into several types, such as rolling, boxcar, and ice-pick scars. These textured marks are remnants of previous breakouts and differ from pigmentation and erythema, which are tonal issues. Dr. Ourian emphasizes, “Acne scars develop when excessive collagen forms at a wound’s healing site, often within the dermis where the initial acne inflammation took place.”

Distinguishing Scarring from Pigmentation

While scarring results from collagen accumulation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a skin pigmentation form caused by skin trauma. Unlike true scarring, it doesn’t damage the follicle, making it essential to distinguish between the two for effective treatment.

Dr. Ourian’s Recommendations for Treating Acne Scars

  1. Microneedling:

Dr. Ourian believes microneedling, performed by trained professionals, is the gold standard for treating scars. This procedure uses minuscule needles to induce micro-punctures in the skin, promoting cellular renewal and boosting collagen and elastin production.

  1. Chemical Peels:

For mild scarring, Dr. Ourian suggests chemical peels with low-pH acid. He notes, “Home-based peels have evolved significantly. For at-home treatments, opt for products that facilitate gentle chemical exfoliation.”

  1. Coolaser® and Neustem™

The Coolaser® treatment employs advanced laser technology to resurface the skin, effectively reducing the visibility of acne scars and boosting patients’ confidence. Severe acne often leaves lasting and embarrassing scars, but Coolaser®resurfacing has proven to be effective in various cases, helping patients regain their confidence in their skin. The Coolaser® treatment takes approximately an hour and involves numbing the face with a topical cream before delivering laser pulses to remove the outer skin layer, resulting in a smoother and clearer complexion. While complete healing takes around 10 to 12 days, notable improvements in scar appearance are expected, depending on the scar type and extent. For deeper scars, additional injections with fillers like Neustem™ may be required for correction.

Addressing Post-Acne Hyperpigmentation

  1. Vitamin C:

A potent agent for dark hyperpigmentation, vitamin C revitalizes the skin while enhancing collagen production. It not only helps lighten existing pigmentation but also prevents future dark spots.

  1. Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHAs):

Chemical peels, rich in AHAs like glycolic and lactic acid, help the skin exfoliate swiftly, fading discoloration. Dr. Ourian recommends a series of superficial peels over time for optimal results.

  1. Retinoids:

By increasing cell turnover rates, retinoids or vitamin A derivatives effectively fade hyperpigmentation. Dr. Ourian stresses the importance of consulting a dermatologist before starting any retinoid regimen.

  1. LED Light Therapy:

Red LED light therapy can address various skin concerns, including inflammation and cellular repair. Dr. Ourian recommends devices with red-light settings for consistent and cumulative benefits.

Tackling Post-Acne Erythema

For erythema, Dr. Ourian advises a holistic approach:

  1. Calming Ingredients:

Incorporate niacinamide and propolis, known for their anti-inflammatory properties, to soothe the skin.

  1. Tranexamic Acid:

An excellent choice for its anti-inflammatory and anti-pigmentation properties.

  1. Light and Laser Treatments:

Dr. Ourian suggests waiting until the skin is breakout-free for at least six weeks before considering laser treatments. For erythema, lasers targeting the red pigment in the blood are effective, with options available for darker skin tones as well.

Dr. Simon Ourian concludes, “Every skin need is unique. It’s vital to consult a professional to tailor treatments for optimal results.” Whether you’re battling scars, pigmentation, or erythema, Dr. Ourian’s comprehensive guide provides a roadmap to healthier, clearer skin.
