OpenAI is reportedly working on a new smartphone project that could fundamentally reshape how users interact with mobile devices. The device is expected to be powered by advanced AI agents, potentially reducing or even replacing the need for traditional mobile applications.

According to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is exploring hardware collaborations with major semiconductor and manufacturing partners, including MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare. These partnerships are expected to support the development of both the smartphone hardware and its underlying AI-focused chip architecture.

The report suggests that OpenAI may design a dedicated smartphone chipset in collaboration with MediaTek and Qualcomm, while Luxshare could serve as a co-design and manufacturing partner for assembling the device. This approach indicates a deeper move by OpenAI into the consumer hardware ecosystem, beyond its current software-driven AI offerings.

Unlike conventional smartphones that rely heavily on standalone apps, the proposed device is expected to function primarily through AI agents. These agents would handle tasks such as communication, search, productivity, and entertainment through conversational and automated interactions, significantly reducing the dependency on traditional app-based navigation.

Analysts believe that by integrating AI deeply into hardware, OpenAI could eliminate many software restrictions and create a more seamless, unified user experience. This would allow AI to operate across system-level functions without being limited by third-party app ecosystems.

The move comes at a time when OpenAI’s products, including its flagship models under ChatGPT, are reportedly reaching nearly one billion weekly users. A dedicated consumer device could further accelerate adoption by embedding AI directly into everyday mobile usage.

If realized, the project could mark one of the most significant shifts in smartphone design since the introduction of app-based ecosystems, potentially redefining how users interact with digital technology in the AI era.
