Ahmedabad | Gujarat — Ahmedabad is on the cusp of a hospitality transformation, with the city poised to attract massive investments over the next five years. Riding on the momentum created by the approval of the Commonwealth Games and a surge in tourism and business activity, Ahmedabad-based Nirma Group is set to make a high-profile entry into the hotel industry with an estimated investment of ₹12,207 crore.
According to sources, the diversified conglomerate has initiated plans to develop a luxury five-star hotel with around 555 rooms on the rapidly growing SG Highway commercial corridor. The project is expected to take shape after receiving environmental clearance, marking one of the largest hospitality investments in Gujarat in recent years.
Industry sources reveal that Nirma Group is in discussions with leading global and domestic hotel operators, including Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), Hyatt Hotels and Marriott International. While no formal agreement has been signed yet, talks are said to be progressing as the group aims to align with an experienced international operator ahead of the Commonwealth Games timeline.
“The demand for quality hotel rooms in Ahmedabad has been rising sharply due to a steady increase in tourism, large-scale business events, music concerts and international cricket matches,” a senior industry official said. “The city has seen high double-digit growth in hospitality demand over the past five years, making it a compelling investment destination.”
At present, Ahmedabad has around 18 hotels in the five-star or deluxe category. However, experts estimate that by the time the Commonwealth Games are held, the city will require at least 15 to 20 additional five-star and deluxe-category hotels to meet the expected influx of visitors, athletes and delegates.
Nirma Group’s entry signals a strategic diversification for the conglomerate, which has so far been active in sectors such as detergents, cement and healthcare. The proposed SG Highway property underscores the group’s intent to tap into premium hospitality, catering to both business and leisure travellers.
Highlighting the sector’s rapid rise, Narendra Somani, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association, Gujarat, said, “The golden phase of Ahmedabad’s hotel industry has begun over the last four years. With the Commonwealth Games announcement, room capacity is expected to rise by over 50 percent, and more than 10 new five-star category hotels are already in the pipeline.”
