Gujarat : Gandhinagar E-Bus Service Wins Hearts, Carries Over 1.53 Lakh Passengers in Two Weeks

GANDHINAGAR : Gandhinagar’s push towards clean and smart mobility has received a massive public endorsement. The city’s newly launched AC e-bus service has carried more than 1.53 lakh passengers in just 14 days, with nearly 11,000 commuters using the service every day, reflecting a growing shift from private vehicles to eco-friendly public transport.

The figures released by the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) show that 1,53,509 passengers travelled on the electric buses between June 29 and July 12. The average daily ridership stood at 10,965 passengers, making the service one of the most successful public transport initiatives in the state.

The response has grown steadily since its launch. On the first day, 6,120 passengers used the service. By July 11, daily ridership had climbed to a record 13,615 passengers, highlighting the increasing confidence of citizens in the new transport system.

A GMC official said, “The overwhelming response shows that citizens are ready to adopt sustainable public transport when it is safe, affordable and comfortable. The e-bus service is a major step towards building a green, clean and smart Gandhinagar.”

The fully air-conditioned buses offer relief from the summer heat while reducing pollution and traffic congestion. Modern CCTV cameras installed in every bus have also enhanced passenger safety, especially for women and students.

Regular commuter Trivedi Niyati, who travels between Dhamasana and Sargasan, praised the initiative.

“The fare is very affordable, making daily travel easier for students and working people. The buses are fully air-conditioned and equipped with CCTV cameras, so women feel safe throughout the journey,” she said.

The e-buses connect key locations such as Sargasan Circle, Pathikashram Terminal and the Secretariat with Kalol, Kadi, Dahegam, Chiloda, Chandkheda, IIT Gandhinagar and Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU). The direct connectivity has reduced travel time and eliminated the need for multiple transfers.

To encourage people to experience the service, the Municipal Corporation introduced 15 days of free travel after the launch. The initiative has encouraged thousands of residents to leave their private vehicles at home, helping reduce traffic while promoting cleaner air.
