SURAT : As Surat struggled to recover from the aftermath of severe flooding, the Adani Hazira Port Fire Team stepped in with a round-the-clock cleanup operation that helped restore normal life in some of the city’s worst-affected areas. Working continuously for 65 hours, the team cleared mud-filled roads, removed wastewater and reopened key streets for public use.

The operation began in the early hours of July 10 after the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) sought urgent assistance from Adani Hazira Port Limited (AHPL). At around 3:30 am, the fire team rushed to the Dumbhal Fire Station with a fire tender before being deployed to Baba Sita Ram Society near GIDC and Maruti Nagar in Pandesara, where floodwaters had left roads buried under mud, debris and contaminated water.

Despite facing roadblocks and water shortages, the firefighters continued their work without interruption. Water had to be transported repeatedly from nearly 12 kilometres away to sustain the cleanup effort.

An AHPL spokesperson said, “Our team worked on a rotational basis for 65 hours to ensure that affected areas became accessible again. Supporting communities during emergencies is an integral part of our commitment to the region.”

The intensive operation restored nearly 15 to 17 kilometres of roads and internal streets, allowing traffic to resume while significantly reducing the risk of disease caused by stagnant wastewater and accumulated waste.

Residents of the affected localities praised the firefighters for their dedication and timely response. Civic officials also appreciated the coordinated effort, saying it helped speed up the city’s recovery after the floods.

A local resident said, “The roads were completely covered with mud after the floods. The fire team worked tirelessly day and night to clean the area. Their efforts brought relief to thousands of families.”
