GANDHINAGAR : In a powerful story of hope emerging from heartbreak, the family of a 24-year-old woman from Gandhinagar turned an unimaginable personal tragedy into a life-saving gift for several patients awaiting organ transplants. Their selfless decision, coupled with swift action by doctors and police, enabled the successful transportation of vital organs through a specially created green corridor to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on Thursday.
Kajalben Kismatbhai Rathod, who was undergoing treatment at GMERS General Hospital in Gandhinagar, was declared brain dead by doctors after exhaustive medical efforts failed to save her. Even as they grappled with overwhelming grief, her family chose to donate her organs, ensuring that others could receive a second chance at life.
Following written consent from the family, doctors retrieved both kidneys, the liver and the pancreas for transplantation. Medical experts said the donated organs have the potential to significantly improve or save the lives of multiple critically ill patients.
Given the limited time available for organ transplantation, hospital authorities sought immediate assistance from the Gandhinagar Police to ensure the organs reached Ahmedabad without delay. Acting on directions from senior officers, police personnel across Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad coordinated extensively to establish a seamless green corridor.
The ambulance carrying the organs travelled through a traffic-free route, allowing it to reach Ahmedabad Civil Hospital within the critical time frame required for successful transplantation.
“This noble decision by the family will bring hope to several patients and their loved ones. Their courage in the face of immense loss is truly inspiring,” said Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi while expressing condolences to the bereaved family.
He also praised the doctors, hospital staff and police teams involved in the operation. “The coordinated efforts of medical professionals and law enforcement personnel ensured that the donated organs reached their destination safely and on time,” he said.
The successful operation stands as a testament to the growing awareness of organ donation in Gujarat and highlights how compassion, medical expertise and efficient policing can come together to save lives even in the midst of tragedy.
