Gandhinagar : Good news for Gujarat! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released its long-range forecast for the 2024 southwest monsoon on Monday, predicting normal to above-normal rainfall for the state. This comes as a welcome relief after several years of average rainfall.

The IMD’s forecast indicates a positive outlook for the entire country, with an anticipated average rainfall exceeding 104% of the Long Period Average (LPA) during the June-September monsoon season. Quantitatively, the national average is expected to be around 106% of the LPA, with a margin of error of ±5%.

While the entire state can expect a good monsoon season, the forecast map suggests particularly beneficial conditions for North Gujarat and the Coastal Saurashtra region. These areas have a higher chance of receiving significantly more rainfall compared to other parts of the state.

This positive forecast is especially encouraging considering Gujarat’s recent rainfall patterns. Over the past five years, the state has received close to 100% of its annual average rainfall. The IMD is expected to provide a more definitive update on the monsoon season rainfall predictions in the last week of May 2024.

Surprise Showers Drench Parts of Bharuch While Heat Wave Looms for Saurashtra

Bharuch residents were treated to an unexpected delight this afternoon as unseasonal rain swept through isolated pockets of the district. The sudden downpour brought much-needed respite from the scorching heat, offering a welcome contrast to the weather forecast that predicted rain only until 8:30 am.

This unexpected shift in weather conditions comes amidst a heat wave warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for parts of Gujarat. According to their latest bulletin, “heat wave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated pockets” in the Saurashtra districts of Porbandar, Junagadh, and Gir Somnath on April 16th and 17th. Residents in these areas can expect temperatures to soar, with Ahmedabad likely to experience a maximum temperature of a scorching 41 degrees celcius.

While Bharuch residents enjoyed a brief break from the heat, the IMD’s warning serves as a stark reminder that the summer season is upon us. Those residing in the affected areas of Saurashtra are advised to take necessary precautions to avoid heatstroke. Staying hydrated, limiting strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and wearing loose, light-colored clothing are crucial steps to stay safe during the heat wave.

The unexpected rain in Bharuch highlights the unpredictable nature of weather patterns. While it offered temporary relief, residents across Gujarat should remain vigilant and heed the IMD’s warnings to ensure a safe and healthy summer season.
