GANDHINAGAR : An IIT Gandhinagar startup is putting artificial intelligence on the path to transforming mobility assessment after Oreejoy Medtech Private Limited won the Boeing BUILD National Finals, securing a ₹10 lakh grant to advance its AI-powered wearable technology.
Oreejoy was among seven teams selected for the grant from around 2,200 applications received nationwide in the fifth edition of Boeing BUILD, with 28 teams reaching the National Finals. The programme provides early-stage startups with mentorship, structured learning, incubator support and industry expertise.
Founded on nearly a decade of research and clinical collaborations, Oreejoy has developed INSTROLE, a lightweight wearable insole that combines pressure sensors, signal processing and artificial intelligence to analyse walking patterns and mobility.
Prof Uttama Lahiri, Oreejoy Founder and Technical Director and Professor at IITGN’s Department of Electrical Engineering, said the idea emerged after he began studying mobility disorders among people with Parkinson’s disease and stroke.
“This made us think about whether the same information could be captured through a wearable system and brought closer to the patient or in fact to any user,” Lahiri said.
The technology tracks weight distribution, foot strikes and changes in gait, transmitting data through an edge device for cloud-based analysis. Its companion app provides users and clinicians with mobility and balance insights to support assessment, monitoring and rehabilitation.
Oreejoy Co-founder and Design Director Dr Neelesh Sharma said affordability and everyday usability were central to the product.
“The goal has been to create a system that is not only technologically advanced, but also practical and accessible,” Sharma said, adding that the wearable approach could reduce gait-analysis costs by around 80%.
The startup’s research has involved around 300 participants across Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and New Delhi. Its applications are expanding from Parkinson’s and stroke rehabilitation to flat-foot assessment and osteoarthritis, with potential sports applications.
The Boeing BUILD grant is expected to help Oreejoy further develop AI-enabled solutions for rehabilitation patients and sports enthusiasts, strengthening Gujarat’s growing healthcare innovation ecosystem.
