AI171 Probe Advances One Year After Ahmedabad Air Crash

Ahmedabad – One year after the devastating crash of Air India Flight AI171 that claimed more than 260 lives and shook the nation, investigators say significant progress has been made in uncovering the circumstances behind one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters, though crucial analysis is still underway before final conclusions can be drawn.

Marking the first anniversary of the tragedy on June 12, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) issued an interim statement reaffirming its commitment to conducting a comprehensive, independent and evidence-based investigation into the crash of the Boeing 787-8 aircraft that was operating from Ahmedabad to London.

The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and leaving families across India and abroad searching for answers.

“Today marks one year since the tragic accident involving Air India Flight AI171. We express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who lost their lives and acknowledge the enduring pain suffered by those affected,” the AAIB said in its statement.

According to the Bureau, investigators have spent the past year conducting an extensive examination of all technical, operational, organisational and human factors associated with the accident. The investigation has involved collaboration with accredited international representatives, technical advisers and aviation experts.

Officials confirmed that substantial progress has been made in analysing aircraft systems, flight recorder data, engine-related components, maintenance records, operational documentation and other evidence recovered during the probe.

“Additional technical evaluations and specialist examinations will continue wherever necessary to ensure that all findings and conclusions are supported by verified evidence and sound scientific analysis,” the AAIB stated.

The agency emphasized that the evidence gathered so far is being assessed through an integrated and comprehensive review process. Once all investigative activities are completed, the findings will undergo mandatory international review and consultation procedures under ICAO Annex 13 before the final report is released.

The AAIB also urged the public and media to avoid speculation regarding the cause of the crash.

“The sole purpose of an accident investigation is to enhance aviation safety through lessons learned and safety recommendations, not to apportion blame or liability,” the statement noted.

Reiterating its commitment to transparency and professionalism, the Bureau said every aspect of the AI171 accident would be examined with utmost diligence to ensure that the final report contributes meaningfully to strengthening aviation safety standards in India and globally.
