After Landslide Victory, BJP Struggles to Finalise Mayors Across Gujarat

Gandhinagar | Gujarat — More than two weeks after sweeping Gujarat’s local body elections, the BJP is facing mounting pressure over an unexpected delay in appointing mayors and key office bearers across 15 municipal corporations. The results were declared on April 28, yet even after 16 days, the party’s parliamentary board has failed to finalise names—breaking a decade-long record for swift civic appointments.

The delay has triggered political chatter about internal disagreements and intense lobbying within party ranks, overshadowing what was expected to be a smooth transition after the BJP’s decisive victory.

Decade-Long Tradition Broken

Historically, Gujarat’s civic leadership is decided within two weeks of election results. In 2015, Ahmedabad’s mayor was sworn in just 12 days after results. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, office bearers were finalised within 14 days.

This year, however, the timeline has stretched beyond 16 days despite multiple meetings of the state BJP parliamentary board.

A senior party source admitted the process has been unusually prolonged.“Discussions are ongoing at multiple levels. The party wants the right balance of experience, caste equations, and regional representation before making final announcements.”

Meetings Stalled Without Official Announcement

The delay has created an administrative standstill. Municipal commissioners cannot convene general meetings without an official notification from the party regarding mayoral and standing committee nominations.

As per procedure, elected representatives must be informed at least three days before the general meeting, where the election of the mayor, deputy mayor, and standing committee chairman is formalised.

With no announcement yet, civic bodies across the state remain in limbo.

Growing Pressure Within Party Ranks

Insiders say intense competition among newly elected corporators and senior leaders has slowed the decision-making process. The party is reportedly attempting to balance representation across communities and regions, while also rewarding loyal leaders.

A senior civic leader said,“The delay is unusual and has created anxiety among elected representatives. Everyone is waiting for clarity so governance work can begin.”

Governance Waiting in the Wings

The prolonged uncertainty has also raised concerns about delays in civic decision-making, budget approvals, and development projects in major cities.
