Gandhinagar | Gujarat — In a decisive move to tackle the growing menace of fake food and counterfeit medicines, the Gujarat government has approved a state-of-the-art Food and Drug Testing Laboratory in Surat with a budget of Rs 50 crore. The upcoming facility is expected to become a powerful weapon against the widespread scams of fake cheese, adulterated spices, diluted milk and spurious medicines that have alarmed consumers across South Gujarat.

The announcement has been welcomed as a major public health safeguard for the region. Officials say the new lab will drastically reduce testing delays and strengthen enforcement against adulteration mafias.

“This lab will help us protect citizens’ health and ensure strict action against those compromising food and drug safety,” said Praful Panseria, Minister of State for Health.

Instant Milk Testing with High-Tech Equipment

One of the most talked-about features of the new facility is its ability to test milk purity within seconds. Until now, verifying whether milk contained urea or excessive water required a lengthy testing process. The new lab will introduce cutting-edge machines capable of delivering near-instant results.

“Whether there is urea or water in milk will now be detected immediately,” Panseria said. “This will make it easier to catch those who endanger public health.”

Officials say this capability will transform routine inspections and strengthen the government’s campaign against adulterated dairy products, which are widely consumed in the region.

Focus on Fake Medicines and Syrups

Beyond food safety, the lab will also tackle a rising threat: counterfeit medicines. Recent incidents involving fake drugs and cough syrups being sold under the names of reputed brands have raised serious concerns among health authorities.

The Surat lab will include specialized equipment to test medicines for:

Correct chemical composition

Quality and safety standards

Presence of harmful or incorrect ingredients

“If a medicine is duplicate or deviates from prescribed standards, it will be detected quickly and reported accurately,” officials confirmed.

Faster Reports Within 14 Days

The Gujarat government has already allocated land for the project and included funding in the state budget. Once operational, the facility will serve the entire South Gujarat zone, not just Surat.

Currently, many samples must be sent to distant cities such as Vadodara for testing, causing delays. The new lab will change that by delivering test reports within 14 days, significantly improving enforcement speed.

A team of specialized experts will be deployed to examine multiple food and drug parameters, ensuring faster and more reliable testing.

A Safety Shield for Public Health

Authorities believe the new laboratory will play a critical role in making South Gujarat adulteration-free. With advanced testing technology and faster reporting, enforcement agencies will be able to act quickly against offenders.

“This Rs 50 crore lab will act as a security shield for people,” Panseria emphasized. “Our goal is to make South Gujarat safe from adulteration.”
