Patan | Gujarat — A fresh controversy has erupted in Gujarat’s folk music circle after popular singer Kinjal Rabari claimed that her life and that of her husband are in danger following her love marriage against the wishes of her family.

The singer released a 56-second video on social media that quickly went viral, in which she appealed for police protection and urged people not to spread rumours about her marriage. The incident has triggered widespread discussion across social media platforms in Gujarat, especially after similar controversies earlier involving well-known singers like Kinjal Dave and Aarti Sangani.

“My life and my husband’s life are in danger”

In the video message, Rabari said she had married Ashok Kumar Chaudhary of the Chaudhary community after repeated attempts to convince her family failed.

“I tried many times to explain my decision to my family, but they were against this marriage,” she said in the video. “So I informed my husband and he came and took me away.”

She also alleged that her husband is being defamed on social media and appealed to the Rabari community not to believe rumours circulating online.

“I want to tell everyone that I married of my own free will. My life and my husband’s life are in danger, so I have contacted an advocate and sought police protection,” she said. “If anything happens to either of us, my family will be responsible.”

Viral video sparks debate

The video has rapidly spread across social media platforms, triggering mixed reactions from supporters and critics. While some users expressed support for the singer’s right to choose her partner, others debated the issue of inter-community marriages within traditional communities.

Authorities have not yet publicly commented on whether a formal request for security has been processed.

From village school singer to folk artist

Kinjal Rabari hails from Sinad village in the Radhanpur region of Patan district. She studied at the local government primary school where her interest in music first developed.

According to locals, her elder brother Kiran Rabari, who used to sing devotional songs in school, inspired her to begin singing. Encouraged by teachers and the school principal Tejabhai Jadhav, Rabari started participating in prayer sessions and singing competitions at school.

Her talent gradually grew as she performed through the school’s sound system during morning prayers and events, eventually building confidence as a performer.

Over the years, she went on to establish herself as a recognised folk singer in Gujarat, performing traditional wedding songs, devotional tracks dedicated to Mother Goddess and several popular Gujarati folk numbers.
