Gandhinagar | Gujarat — In a significant political development, Surat has emerged as the power centre of Gujarat politics with the election of Purnesh Modi as Deputy Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. The appointment of the Surat (West) MLA marks a major milestone for the BJP, further strengthening the city’s influence in state governance.
With this elevation, Purnesh Modi becomes the second prominent BJP leader from Surat to hold a crucial post after Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who represents Majura constituency. Political observers say Surat’s growing clout reflects the party’s strategic consolidation in South Gujarat.
Purnesh Modi had earlier gained national attention after filing a defamation complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his “Modi surname” remark made during a 2019 election rally in Kolar. The case led to Gandhi’s conviction by a Gujarat court, which sentenced him to two years in jail before the matter escalated to higher courts, making Modi a prominent figure in national political discourse.
The election for the Deputy Speaker’s post took place during the Assembly session in Gandhinagar amid intense political manoeuvring. While Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar’s name was proposed by Dinesh Thakor, BJP leader Jitu Vaghani moved the motion for Purnesh Modi. Parmar’s motion was rejected by the majority, paving the way for Modi’s decisive victory.
The Aam Aadmi Party chose not to back any candidate and opted for NOTA during the voting process, a move that drew sharp political reactions. Soon after the results were declared, Purnesh Modi was escorted to his seat next to Leader of Opposition Dr. Tushar Chaudhary by Parliamentary Minister Hrishikesh Patel — a moment seen as symbolic of BJP’s firm control in the House.
Speaking after his election, Modi said, “I am grateful to the honourable members for their trust. I will uphold the dignity of the Chair and ensure smooth functioning of the Assembly in accordance with constitutional principles.”
On the first day of the Assembly session, the BJP also held a key strategy meeting to guide MLAs on maintaining discipline and countering opposition tactics. Party leaders stressed the importance of full attendance during crucial proceedings to present a united front.
