Gujarat Crafts Soar: Rs.124 Cr Sales, Global GI Tags

Ahmedabad, Gujarat – In a significant boost to the state’s rich cultural heritage and rural economy, iNDEXT-c, a nodal agency for industrial promotion in Gujarat, has spearheaded a remarkable resurgence in the handloom and handicraft sector.

Over the past three years (2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25), a staggering 234 fairs and exhibitions organized by iNDEXT-c have facilitated sales exceeding Rs. 124 crore, directly benefiting nearly 24,689 artisans across India, including Gujarat.

This impressive figure underscores the Gujarat government’s unwavering commitment to the economic upliftment and social dignity of its artisans. “Our aim is to ensure that every person in society gets the opportunity to use their skills and can live with human dignity,” stated a spokesperson from the Gujarat government. “We are continuously implementing innovative projects and schemes to provide a robust marketing platform for these talented individuals and improve their social standing.”

The majority of these successful initiatives, 205 to be precise, were organized within Gujarat itself, at prominent venues like Ahmedabad Haat, Bhuj Haat, and Bopal Hastaka Haat. These local efforts alone generated over Rs. 99 crore in sales for approximately 21,318 handloom and handicraft artisans.

Beyond state borders, iNDEXT-c extended its reach, organizing 29 fairs in other states, where 3,380 artisans collectively sold items worth more than Rs. 25.87 crore. These external exhibitions were held in cities like Mysore, Hyderabad, Prayagraj, Bhopal-Indore, Delhi, Mumbai, and Rajasthan, effectively promoting Gujarat’s vibrant craftsmanship on a national scale.

iNDEXT-c’s multifaceted approach extends beyond just organizing sales platforms. Their comprehensive efforts include identifying artisans and issuing artisan cards, providing skill development training, distributing tool kits, and even bestowing state honors and awards to recognize excellence. The agency is also actively involved in establishing permanent haats in Vadodara, Siddhpur, and Rajkot, and is launching the P.M. Ekta Mall in Surat, further solidifying market access for artisans.

Adding another feather to Gujarat’s cap, 28 of its unique handloom and handicraft products have received the prestigious ‘GI’ (Geographical Indication) tag. These include iconic items such as Sankheda furniture, Kutch embroidery, Tanglia shawl, Surat zari work, Patan Patola, and Kutch’s Rogan craft, among others. “Getting the prestigious ‘GI’ tag for these products has given encouragement to local industries and recognition to artisans at the global level,” remarked a handicraft artisan, highlighting the significance of this global acknowledgment. Furthermore, in 2023, 11 exceptional artisans were honored with the Craftwise Award by the state government, a testament to their dedication and skill.
