Ahmedabad, Gujarat – A worrying surge in COVID-19 cases has gripped Gujarat, with Ahmedabad city alone reporting a staggering 60 new infections in a single day on Tuesday.

The escalating numbers signal a potential resurgence of the virus, prompting renewed concerns among health authorities and the public. Adding to the alarm, Rajkot’s top police official, District Police Chief Himkar Singh, has also tested positive for the virus, underscoring the pervasive nature of the current wave.

The latest figures paint a stark picture: Ahmedabad’s active case count has jumped to 241 out of a total of 330 reported cases, with a significant concentration in the city’s western areas. Localities like Bopal-Ghuma, Thaltej, Gota, and Satellite have seen over 190 cases, indicating a localized but intense spread.

Rajkot, too, is feeling the heat, with eight new positive cases reported on Tuesday, bringing the city’s total active cases to 52. Among the newly infected in Rajkot are seven men and one woman.

Rajkot District Police Chief Himkar Singh confirmed his diagnosis. “Due to the effects of cold, cough, and fever, I had a corona report done, due to which I am currently home isolated,” Singh stated. “Although my health is currently stable and I do not have any special problems, I am home isolated as per the doctor’s advice and will resume work after the report comes negative.” His rapid isolation highlights the ongoing vigilance required even among public officials.

Surat has also contributed to the rising tally, with three new cases, including a woman who recently returned from Thailand. The state has recorded two COVID-19 related fatalities, both women, adding a grim dimension to the current situation. Nationally, the active case count stands at 4026, with 39 reported deaths.

Despite the escalating numbers, official statements from the state government appear to downplay the severity. On Monday, 95 new cases were reported across Gujarat, with 22 hospitalizations and 375 in home isolation, pushing the state’s total active cases to 397.

However, the government’s daily health bulletin did not specify any deaths due to COVID-19 on Monday, even though two fatalities were reported elsewhere. Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, during a program in Kadi, remarked, “Covid is now a part of life. Such a month keeps coming every year or two,” suggesting a normalization of the virus’s presence.

While 6 patients in Rajkot have recovered today, offering a glimmer of relief, the overall trend points to a need for increased caution. The lack of secondary infections from previously reported cases in Surat indicates a contained spread in some instances, but the widespread new diagnoses suggest a fresh challenge for public health systems. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of this renewed COVID-19 wave across Gujarat.
