Surat: Smit Jiyani, accused of killing his wife and four-year-old son and injuring his parents in a gruesome attack on December 27, attempted suicide again while undergoing treatment in a private hospital. Jiyani tried to slit his throat with a shard of glass, intensifying the tragic circumstances surrounding the case.

The horrific series of events began in Surat’s Sarthana area in the early hours of December 27, when Jiyani attacked his wife and son with a kitchen knife, resulting in their deaths. He then turned the weapon on his parents, seriously injuring them. Following these attacks, Jiyani attempted to harm himself but was stopped and admitted to a private hospital along with his injured parents.

Second Suicide Attempt at the Hospital

Four days into his hospital stay, Jiyani attempted to take his life once again. On Tuesday, as doctors prepared to discharge him, Jiyani asked to use the toilet. While inside, he used a shard of glass to slit his throat. Police personnel stationed outside the restroom quickly intervened and rushed him back to the hospital ward for immediate treatment.

Medical staff confirmed that Jiyani sustained a deep wound to his throat. Although his condition is being closely monitored, his survival raises concerns over his mental state and the ongoing investigation into the case.

Police Investigation Hampered

According to authorities, Jiyani has been uncooperative during police interrogations despite his health being declared stable in recent days. Investigators from the Sarthana Police have struggled to record his statement, as Jiyani continues to resist engaging in the investigation process.

His recent suicide attempt is suspected to have been triggered by his knowledge that he would be discharged and subsequently arrested.

Parents’ Condition and the Aftermath

The parents, who were also admitted to the hospital after the brutal attack, are in differing states of recovery. Jiyani’s father has been discharged, while his mother remains in critical condition in the ICU.

Neighbours recall the harrowing events of December 27 when Jiyani’s mother, despite her injuries, managed to alert them, leading to the family’s rescue. Emergency responders transported all injured individuals to the hospital, while Jiyani’s wife and son were declared dead.

Sequence of Events

Police reports reveal that Jiyani initiated the attack while his family members were asleep. First targeting his wife and son, he then turned on his parents. Authorities suspect the motive behind the killings could be tied to personal or psychological issues, but the lack of cooperation from Jiyani has delayed further clarity.
