Ahmedabad : In a significant move towards eradicating superstition in Gujarat, rationalists Ashwin Karia and Girish Sundhia of Palanpur have filed a public interest petition urging the state government to introduce and enforce the Abolition of Superstitions Act. The Gujarat High Court, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, has issued a notice to the state government, requesting their stance on this crucial matter.

The petitioners argue that many unscrupulous elements in Gujarat exploit people’s beliefs, leading to physical, mental, and financial harm. These incidents of exploitation, often rooted in superstition and deception, are a daily occurrence. However, many cases go unreported, while those that are documented reveal severe crimes. Despite the efforts of rationalists who risk their lives to expose these frauds, the problem persists and can only be effectively addressed through stringent legislation.

The petition highlights that five other states in India have already enacted and implemented laws against superstition. This provides a precedent and a framework that Gujarat can follow. The petitioners believe that by enacting such a law, the Gujarat government can take a significant step towards protecting its citizens from exploitation and harm caused by superstitious practices.

The Satyashodhak Sabha, a rationalist organisation, sees the High Court’s notice as a pivotal opportunity for the Gujarat government to demonstrate its commitment to public welfare. They urge the government to consider this notice seriously and to act promptly in drafting and implementing a law against superstition.

According to Ashwin Karia and Girish Sundhia, a law against superstition will not only protect individuals from exploitation but also promote rational thinking and scientific temper among the populace. The rationalists emphasise that public awareness and legal enforcement are both essential to combat deeply ingrained superstitious beliefs that lead to various forms of exploitation.
