AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT : Ahmedabad grapples with a surge in waterborne illnesses as scorching temperatures grip the city. The Sola Civil Hospital reported a staggering 1560 cases in just one week, highlighting the alarming rise in health concerns.

“The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken swift action to address the situation,” declared a spokesperson. “We understand the urgency and are working tirelessly to control the outbreak.”

The most concerning aspect is the rapid increase in waterborne diseases. A total of 1366 cases of diarrhea and vomiting were reported, along with 18 alarming cases of cholera. These numbers paint a grim picture, with specific wards like Amraiwadi, Vatwa, Danilimda, Maninagar, Lambha, Vastral, Bhaipura, and Indrapuri emerging as hotspots. Public health officials confirmed that 134 water samples tested unfit for consumption, further emphasizing the need for immediate intervention.

Adding to the city’s woes, swine flu cases have steadily climbed over the past month. A concerning 60 new cases were reported, raising concerns about a potential outbreak. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has proactively set up isolation wards in city hospitals to handle potential swine flu cases.

The health department has issued directives to the food and health divisions. Their focus lies on conducting water sample testing, inspecting ice factories, and ensuring proper hygiene standards at street vendors selling beverages and snacks like Shikanji and Panipuri.

With monsoon approaching, the engineer department is ramping up pre-monsoon cleaning efforts. They are seeking details on the number of catch pits cleaned across the city to prevent flooding in low-lying areas like Sindhubhan Road, Bodakdev, Bhopal, Naroda, Vastral, Helmet Circle, Vastrapur, Vejalpur, and Ranip, which faced inundation during last year’s monsoon season.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is working diligently to combat the surge in waterborne diseases and prevent further outbreaks. Residents are advised to prioritize hygiene practices, consume only treated water, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
