Vadodara : Gujarat High Court Grants Bail to Four Accused in Harni Boat Accident Case

VADODARA, GUJARAT : In a significant development, the Gujarat High Court has extended bail to four out of the 18 accused implicated in the Vadodara Harni lake boat accident case. The tragic incident, which claimed the lives of 14 individuals, including 12 children and two teachers, prompted widespread outrage and legal action. As the judicial inquiry progresses, questions regarding safety measures and regulatory oversight in tourist activities come to the forefront.

The Gujarat High Court’s decision to grant bail to four of the 18 accused in the Vadodara Harni lake boat accident case marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the tragic incident. Identified as Tejal Doshi, Neha Doshi, Nutan Paresh Shah, and Vaishakhi Shah, the released individuals await further adjudication as the investigation unfolds.

The fateful events unfolded on January 18, 2024, when a recreational outing turned into a nightmare for students of New Sunrise School. As they embarked on a picnic to Harani Lake in Vadodara, tragedy struck as the overloaded boat they were on capsized, resulting in the loss of 14 lives, predominantly children. The incident shed light on lax safety protocols and regulatory oversights in tourist activities, triggering widespread public outcry and legal action.

Responding to the gravity of the situation, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation initiated legal proceedings against officials implicated in the accident. A committee comprising 13 members was constituted to probe the circumstances leading to the tragedy and ascertain accountability.

During a recent hearing before a bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Anirudh Mayee, the Gujarat High Court emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures in tourism activities across the state. In response, the government outlined plans to bolster public safety by implementing stringent regulatory frameworks and certification protocols for various recreational activities, including boating in inland water bodies.

Meanwhile, administrative actions were taken against officials found negligent in their duties. Mitesh Mali, an additional assistant in the Futuristic Cell, faced termination, while Jig Sacharia, an Additional Engineer of North Zone Ward-3, was suspended. Additionally, notices were issued to six officials, compelling them to provide explanations within seven days regarding their roles in the botched incident.
