Surat industrialist Mahendrabhai Katargamwala dies at 76

SURAT: Surat’s industrial and social circles were plunged into mourning following the death of prominent industrialist and social leader Mahendrabhai Nathubhai Katargamwala at the age of 76 after a prolonged illness.

Katargamwala, who served as former president of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), was remembered for his contribution to the development of trade and industry as well as his long-standing involvement in social and religious organisations.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi, along with prominent industrialists, social leaders and citizens, gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects.

Katargamwala had also made significant contributions to the healthcare sector, serving as a trustee of several hospitals in Surat and supporting initiatives aimed at public welfare.

He had been undergoing treatment in Mumbai and later in Surat before his condition deteriorated. He breathed his last during treatment, following which his mortal remains were taken to his residence at Varachha Bhakti Bagh, Dholikui.

A funeral procession later moved to the Ashwini Kumar Crematorium, where his last rites were performed in the presence of family members, industrialists, social leaders and well-wishers.

Remembering his contribution, members of Surat’s business community said his passing marked the end of an important chapter in the city’s industrial and social life.

His colleagues and associates recalled his commitment to strengthening the business community while remaining closely connected with social and public-service initiatives.

The large gathering at his last rites reflected the respect he commanded across Surat’s industrial, social and civic circles.
