KUTCH: Seven labourers were killed and more than 20 injured after a Bolero pickup carrying a large group of workers collided with a heavy truck near Ari Park, close to Khavda in Kutch, on Friday morning.
The impact crushed the pickup’s cabin, trapping several occupants beneath the truck. Rescue teams rushed to the spot as police and local residents worked to pull the injured from the wreckage.
Kutch Collector Anil Ranavasiya confirmed the fatalities during a statement at Bhuj Civil Hospital.
“Approximately 30 people were travelling in the Bolero, and seven of them have died,” Ranavasiya said. He added that the injured had been shifted to the hospital for treatment.
Crane Used to Rescue Trapped Labourers
West Kutch Superintendent of Police Vikas Sunda said police personnel stationed at the Ari Park check-post reached the accident site immediately after receiving information.
Rescue operations were launched to extricate labourers trapped beneath the truck. Police arranged a crane from a nearby industrial area to lift the vehicle and help rescue those caught in the wreckage.
“Police personnel rushed to the scene and arranged a crane to extricate the labourers trapped beneath the truck,” Sunda said.
According to the SP, around 20 to 22 injured people were undergoing treatment at Bhuj Civil Hospital.
Officials Visit Injured at Hospital
The accident triggered an emergency response, with district officials visiting the injured at the hospital. The severity of the collision left several occupants trapped inside the damaged pickup, complicating rescue efforts.
Initial reports indicated that the vehicle was carrying a large number of labourers when it collided with the truck. The exact circumstances leading to the crash, including how many people were travelling in the pickup, are yet to be fully established.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of workers travelling in crowded goods vehicles. Further details about the identities of the deceased and the condition of the injured are awaited.
