SURAT: Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh has set an ambitious target of building a $350-billion Indian textile industry by 2030, including $100 billion in exports, while urging Surat to move beyond man-made fibres and expand into technical textiles and garment manufacturing.
Addressing the Vikas Vimarsh symposium organised by the Union Ministry of Textiles and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) in Sarsana on Friday, Singh emphasised industrial peace, entrepreneurship and workforce development.
“Entrepreneurship is woven into the very air of Gujarat,” Singh said, adding that Surat’s industrial growth depended on maintaining its atmosphere of brotherhood and cooperation.
He described Surat as “Mini India”, where linguistic differences and labour-related challenges should not obstruct development.
Singh said India’s textile sector must capitalise on its young workforce to compete globally. He also highlighted the government’s ambition to expand exports and strengthen domestic manufacturing.
Referring to the upcoming PM-MITRA Park in Navsari, Singh said, “It is my desire that at least 10% of the space in this park be dedicated to technical textiles.”
He urged Surat’s manufacturers to explore applications across sectors such as agriculture and aviation instead of depending heavily on conventional textile products.
Singh also highlighted opportunities in garmenting, industrial packaging and sustainable fibres, including banana and milkweed, as India seeks to strengthen its position in global textile markets.
