SURAT, GUJARAT : Tensions simmer in the diamond city of Surat as the unopposed election of BJP’s Mukesh Dalal from the Surat Lok Sabha seat triggers discontent among voters. The perceived loss of their democratic right to vote has left many residents feeling disenfranchised, leading to incidents of frustration directed at BJP leaders.

In a recent altercation, Nancy Shah, a BJP councillor, faced a bitter encounter when she was forcefully pushed away by the secretary of a residential apartment on Palanpur Canal road in Surat while distributing election slips to residents falling under the Navsari Lok Sabha constituency.

The unopposed declaration of BJP’s Mukesh Dalal as the Surat Lok Sabha candidate has stirred resentment among Surat voters, as they feel deprived of their opportunity to cast their votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha election on May 7. This sentiment prevails especially in large pockets of Surat, including Pal, Athwalines, Udhana, Vesu, Olpad, and Choriyasi, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Navsari Lok Sabha constituency, where BJP Gujarat president CR Paatil is contesting against Congress’ Naishad Desai.

In response to the mounting discontent, BJP workers have intensified their efforts to mobilize voters in areas falling under Navsari and Bardoli Lok Sabha constituencies, such as Sarthana, by distributing voter slips and raising awareness about the voting process on May 7.

The incident involving BJP councillor Nancy Shah unfolded at Bhaktidharm society on Palanpur Canal Road in Surat on Wednesday evening. Shah’s attempt to distribute voter slips was met with resistance from the society’s secretary, who allegedly pushed her aside, questioning the repeated distribution of voter slips.

“The incident with our woman councillor occurred when she was performing her duty to distribute voters’ slips. It is disheartening to see such resistance, especially when we are trying to ensure voter awareness and participation,” remarked a BJP spokesperson.

The altercation underscores the growing frustration among Surat residents over the perceived erosion of their democratic rights. Many feel aggrieved by the uncontested election outcome, which they believe undermines the essence of democracy and deprives them of their fundamental right to choose their representative.

Despite the challenges posed by the unopposed election, efforts to engage voters and facilitate their participation in the electoral process continue unabated. BJP workers remain undeterred in their mission to ensure maximum voter turnout and uphold the democratic principles that form the cornerstone of India’s electoral system.
